First let me get it out of the way by saying I am a huge beatles fan. However, I just don’t see the point in buying a “Remastered” Album by ANY artist. “Remaster” is simply a industry buzz word. All it means is that the album is cleaned up from the originals so to speak. Oh yeah and they throw in the bells and whistles of glossy photos and all the song lyrics. Oooh big deal! As far as I am concerned, it isn’t a very big difference from what I’ve heard, and a few tracks I’ve listened to so far. That is all fine and dandy, if you are adding to your collection with albums you don’t already own. But, frankly most Beatles fans are die hard fans, and already own all of the studio albums. I don’t understand why anyone would want to shell out more money for an album they already have, for very tiny improvements and a few bells and whistles. It is just another way for Apple to financially cash in on the cash cow that is the Beatles. As a fan, I am angry that Apple would be so greedy, and in a way I feel they are taking advantage of us. They didn’t do this for their fans. They did it out of GREED plain Greed. Why don’t they just give us what we want and release Beatles on I-Tunes. I know that issue is quite complicated and easier said than done, especially with the remaining members all having to agree before a project or release is committed to. But they can do a lot better then just releasing “Remasters” and crap like “Across the Universe” and the even more dreadful “Love”

  3. M. Smith Said,

The White Album is not really an album. It has more of the feel of a compilation than a coherent set of songs. People who know the history of the band know that the months during which the White Album was recorded were the first months during which the cracks and fissures in the band really started to show in public. Well, those cracks really showed on this album too. Gone was the cohesiveness that marked their previous four studio releases – Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper’s. The quality of the individual songs themselves was also noticeably lower than in Sgt. Pepper’s and Revolver.

Which brings me to the remaster. I admit, there is some ear candy in this release. “Blackbird” sounds a lot crisper, the instruments in “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” come through more clearly, and you can hear the strums on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” better than ever. Of course, the downside is that you can also hear Yoko’s fingernails-on-the-chalkboard voice in “Bungalow Bill” more clearly, and I realized that no, there really is no saving grace for that song. The cacophony of “Helter Skelter” is no more intelligible, and the weakness of “I Will” compared to the band’s earlier love songs is clearer than ever. I’m sure some will disagree, but crisper sounds can’t make this album into anything more than it was – a disappointing step down from the band’s previous releases.

If you buy this as part of the box set, I won’t criticize. But if you spend money to buy it on its own, it is not money well spent. Sound quality is not what was missing from this album.

  4. A. dale Said,

To be brief; Were all recordings made of the questionable quality enhanced here? Like Lennon’s “Primal” the inadequacies of the time were obscured by the emotional nature of the offerings. Springstein at Hammersmith is an excellent example of artists whose recordings literally encapselled the moment. You could almost smell the leaves outdoors in the park on that particular “frozen?” moment in time. Enhancement of the ‘beatles “white album” leaves us with the question; What was the flavor of the time that compelled us to swallow whole large tracts of post-psychedelic euphoria?
